The global supply chain for second-hand smartphones — particularly iPhones — runs almost entirely through Shenzhen. According to Apple's manufacturing partner Foxconn, every day 50,000–60,000 used iPhones are recycled through legitimate channels in Apple's major markets. About 20% go to the United States while the rest flow into approximately 30 trading companies in Hong Kong, where they are graded based on function and appearance, auctioned, and resold to dealers — mostly from Shenzhen. Once in Shenzhen, these devices enter the Huaqiangbei market ecosystem: tested, sorted by grade, refurbished where needed, and sold wholesale to resellers from Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America. The iPhone 11 and 12 series now trade between ¥600–2,700 RMB. iPhone 13 series between ¥1,450–3,300 RMB. iPhone 14 Pro Max at ¥2,850–6,150 RMB.
